Recognition and impact

Our commitment to world-class research and teaching have contributed to UQ's consistent high ranking as one of the world's top 50 world universities.

By comparison with the Group of 8 Australia universities, and with local comparator universities, UQ has the strongest Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) results across the broad scope of health sciences. In 2018–2019, UQ’s health and behavioural sciences research achieved the top score of 5 (well above world standard) for clinical sciences (incorporating rehabilitation), dentistry, human movement and sports science, neurosciences, nursing, pharmacology and pharmaceutical sciences, social work, psychology and cognitive sciences.

Our rankings and achievements

Dentistry
Health and Rehabilitation Sciences
  • UQ's School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences is leading the way in telerehabilitation research and technology, providing the community greater access to allied health services through the Centre for Research in Telerehabilitation and UQ's Telerehabilitation Clinic.
Human Movement and Sport Sciences
  • Human Movement and Sport Sciences at UQ is ranked 1st in Australia and 1st in the world in the University Rankings of Academic Performance (2019–2020).
  • UQ was ranked 1st in Australia and 2nd in the world for sports-related subjects in the QS World University Rankings by Subject (2021-2024).
  • Research from the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences, led by Professor Wendy Brown, was drawn upon to establish new physical activity guidelines by the Australian Federal Department of Health.
Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work
  • UQ is ranked 33rd in the world for nursing in the QS World University Rankings by Subject (2023).
  • Professor Karen Healy, from the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work, collaborated with the Queensland Department of Communities, Micah Projects and Uniting Care Communities to increase the involvement of families in the child protection decision-making process.
Pharmacy
Psychology
  • UQ was ranked 4th in Australia and 30th in the world for psychology in the QS World University Rankings by Subject (2023).
  • The internationally acclaimed Triple P – Positive Parenting Program developed by UQ School of Psychology’s Professor Matt Sanders and his team has changed the lives of millions of families across the globe. The program gives parents the skills they need to raise confident, healthy children and teenagers, and to build stronger family relationships.
  • Over 400,000 Queensland drivers have taken the hazard perception test developed by researchers from our School of Psychology, contributing to a decline in novice crash rates across the state.

Research

  • Our researchers scored the highest possible rating in the 2018-2019 Excellence in Research Australia Outcomes
  • UQ is ranked 37th in the world and 4th in Australia by Performance Ranking for Scientific Papers for World Universities NTU Rankings (2023).
  • UQ is ranked #1 in Australia for research overall, and research in life sciences in the Nature Index Tables (2022).
  • The US Department of Defense (DoD) has committed more than A$1.3 million from its Breast Cancer Research Program to a Queensland study tackling the spread of tumours to the brain. The University of Queensland will conduct the three-year project, the only project outside North America awarded funding under the DoD’s Breast Cancer Breakthrough Scheme (Award #W81XWH-17-1-0064 & 17-1-0065). The study builds on previous findings from Professors Greg Monteith (UQ School of Pharmacy and Mater Research Institute) and Sarah Roberts-Thomson (UQ School of Pharmacy) and Professor Sunil Lakhani and Dr Jodi Saunus from the UQ Centre for Clinical Research (UQCCR).
